Modern Italian, used to be a Tuscan dialect only spoken in Florence, Pisa and Sienna, which due to its cultural prestige, after all it was the language in which La Divina Comedia was written, spread across the whole of Italy and was adopted as the official language. The three great authors of the Italian Pre-Renaissance, Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca y Giovanni Boccaccio wrote their pieces in Tuscan. It is estimated that nowadays around 125 million people speak Italian. Is the official language of Italy, Switzerland, San Marino, the Vatican City and some counties on the Istria, such as Slovenska Istra (Slovenia) and Istarska županija (Croatia). Italian is also spoken in Malta, Eritrea and Somalia. Italian spelling does correspond with its pronunciation. Italian has retained final consonants and vowels, as well as double consonants. In terms of linguistic stress, an accent can be put on the penultimate syllable, although there are some words which carry accents on the last or the antepenultimate syllable. The Italian alphabet is made up of 21 letters. Vowels can carry an accent, especially if they occur at the end of the word. Accents can be either on the penultimate or last syllable, which shows whether the vowel is open or closed. Grammatically, Italian is very similar to both Spanish and French. There are three different verb conjugations, as well as the indicative, subjunctive, conditional and imperative forms. Furthermore there are impersonal forms, such as the infinitive, the gerund and the participle. |
