Brief Description of the City

The city of Strasbourg is located in north-east France on the Ill River, very close to the German border. It is a beautiful city and its centre is listed as a UNSECO World Heritage site. It is also famous as the headquarters of the Council of Europe, amongst other European institutions.

What is there to do in Strasbourg?

There are many interesting things to do in Strasbourg. Its principal attraction is its stunning gothic cathedral. Walk around the pretty old quarter of Strasbourg, "la petite France", an area which is very popular with tourists.

For museums, Strasbourg has a good variety. There is the Musée Archéologique (Archaeological Museum), the Musée Zoologique (Zoological Museum), or for a fantastic collection of medieval art, the Musée de l’Oeuvre Notre-Dame.

For Art-lovers, there is the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Fine Arts Museum) and the Musée d'Art moderne et contemporain (Modern Art Museum).

After all of the sight-seeing, why not relax in Strasbourg´s Orangery Park, the largest in the city and located opposite the Council of Europe. After the French Revolution, 138 Orange trees were planted here, hence its name. It also has a small zoo and a beautiful rose garden.

Nightlife

The students in Strasbourg make its nightlife vibrant. The rue des Juifs and the area around the cathedral are normally popular. There are many bars and clubs and the city also has plenty of live music on offer.

Food

Local specialities in Strasbourg tend to have both French and German influences. It includes lewerwurst (sausage) and popular cheeses of the Alsace-Lorraine region. For those with more of a sweet tooth, then try linzertorte, (spice bread with honey, almonds, nutmeg, cloves and lemon) or kougelhopf (brioche with raisins and flaked almonds).
