Brief Description of the City Rennes is capital of the Brittany region and is located in North-West France, about 300 km West of Paris and is situated at the confluence of two rivers, the Ille and the Vilaine. Rennes is both an artistic and an historic city, making it a great place to visit. What is there to do in Rennes? Rennes has a wide variety of attractions for visitors, including museums and art galleries, a botanical garden, parks, a market, beautiful churches and its own football club. Transport round the city is good, as it has a metro (built only 8 years ago) and a good bus network, making it easy to get around. Visit the beautiful St-Pierre Cathedral and close by the St-Sauveur and the St-Germain churches. If you are interested in art, then visit the Musée des Beaux Arts (Fine Arts Museum) which has an extensive collection from Ancient Egypt to Modern Art. There is also the Musée de Bretagne (Museum of Brittany), which presents the history of the region. If you enjoy music, then visit the Rennes Opera. Rennes also has a reputation as being the ´rock city´ from the 1980´s and 1990´s and it has produced many notable French artists. Every Saturday there is the Marché de Lices (Lices Market) located in the historic centre. Both food and flowers are sold here and there is a large range of products to choose from, given that this is the third largest market in the country. There are also some lovely boutiques in this area but the main shopping area starts at the place de l'Hôtel de Ville. There are also plenty of shopping centres in the city with everything you need. Rennes has around 400 cafes and restaurants so there is something for everyone here, from bistros to haute-cuisine, international to regional dishes. You must of course eat a delicious crepe or galette, and you can choose from savoury or sweet. One of the local specialities is a galette saucisse which is a sausage in a galette (a buckwheat pancake). Try it with mustard, cheese or simply on its own, it is delicious! Nightlife Rennes has a good selection of bars and the best place to go is down the Rue St. Michel (known as the Rue de la Soif - Thirst Street) which is the main street for going out. Rennes has a large population of students so the nightlife is animated, with Thursday and Saturday being the busiest nights of the week. |
