Brief description of the city

Located on the south-east coast of France, in the beautiful Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, Marseille is the largest commercial port in France. It has the second largest population in France, after Paris. Marseille has been chosen as the European Capital of Culture for 2013.Its Mediterranean climate and privileged location make it a fantastic place to visit.

What is there to do in Marseille?

In Marseille there is something for everyone and is a centre for culture and entertainment.

The Vieux Port
The port of Marseille is a lovely harbour, lined with cafes and next to the fish market. There are several shops selling collectables and souvenirs. Once the main commercial port in France, it is today only used for local boat trips and as a marina.

Near to the Old Port is one of Marseille´s main attractions; the Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica, located at the highest point of the city. It is a stunning church, standing at 500 ft tall, with a beautiful statue of the Virgin with Child made from gold leaf. It also offers a fantastic view of the city.

If you like art galleries, then a visit to the Musée des Beaux-Arts is recommended. It is the oldest museum in Marseille. It holds collections of paintings, drawings and sculptures from the 16th to the 19th centuries and one of its special features is its collection of works by Provençal artists.

If you like the outdoors, then why not visit Les Calanques. They are narrow, deep inlets lined with limestone cliffs, some with beaches at the end, some with little harbours. You can do anything from hiking to diving or simply view the Calanques from a boat. Make the most of the beautiful emerald waters by having a cool swim.

Food

Two local dishes which must be sampled are bouillabaisse and ratatouille. Bouillabaisse is a seafood soup and ratatouille a kind of vegetable stew. You can also eat international cuisine in the many of the restaurants.

Nightlife

Marseille is full of a variety of clubs and bars and the best areas to go out are the Vieux Port and Place Thiars. There are many glaciers in Marseille as it is a very popular place for ice-cream. There is also plenty of live music, theatre and film so there is no way of getting bored here.

Shopping

Most of the shops are open Monday-Saturday and in the centre of the town there is a wide variety, from shops of famous brands to little boutiques and Provençal souvenirs. Le centre Bourse has many shops, with over 200 boutiques. If you are looking to buy presents and souvenirs, then the best place to go is between the Old Port and Le Panier.
