Brief Description of the City Lille is situated on the Deûle River, in Northern France and capital of the Nord-Pas de Calais region. The name Lille is derived from the Latin insula, meaning Island. Lille has an interesting history, having been possessed by various dynasties including Flemish, Burgundian, Spanish and of course, French. It is an artistic and historic city and was named European Culture Capital in 2004. What is there to do in Lille? Visit the Place du Général de Gaulle where you can see the Column of the Goddess a bronze statue commemorating the siege of 1792. There is also the Grande Garde, a lovely monument built in 1717, representing the royal presence of the King of France in the centre of the city. The Citadel is most definitely worth a visit, a beautiful fort built around 1667-1670, but if you want to go here, you need to book a tour through the Lille Tourist Office as the army still occupies it. The impressive Town Hall and its Belfry is a beautiful art-deco building, located in the Place Roger Salengro. Climb 105 metres up the Belfry in order to get a great view of the city, which since 2002 has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Palais de Beaux Artes (Fine Arts Museum), which has a superb collection of European paintings by artists such as Goya, Rubens and Delacroix. You can also visit the birthplace of Charles de Gaulle, which is now a museum. If you enjoy the outdoors then there are some lovely green areas in the city. Visit the Botanical Garden, the Vauban Garden, the Henri-Matisse Park or the Jean-Baptiste Lebas Park. In terms of cuisine, Lille has a variety of traditional food on offer, often with Flemish influence. Try the carbonnade flamande (beef stew in beer) or waterzoi (fish or chicken in cream sauce) and wash it down with a cold jug of local beer. Nightlife As it is a student city, Lille has a particularly lively nightlife. Walk along Rue Masséna or Rue de Gand which have a variety of restaurants, bars and clubs. Most bars stay open until anytime between midnight and 2am, and clubs are open from 11pm until dawn, so you can party all night long! |
