The city

The capital of Wales, lying on the shores of the Bristol Channel, Cardiff is amongst the youngest capitals of Europe, as it was only established as such in 1955. Apart from being Wales' political capital, it is also home to the country’s chief commercial, sports, education, culture and media institutions.

Around 100 years ago, Cardiff was the most important coal hub in the world, and during that time the city became very rich.

Nowadays, Cardiff has an unbeatable reputation, because of the extensive restructuring, the city underwent. The city’s quayside was transformed into a string of popular restaurants and tourist attractions. Cardiff’s excellent museums, theatres, or one of the more than 330 parks and gardens, are always worth a visit. At this point it should be added that Cardiff is also home to some excellent shops, boutiques and restaurants.

What is there to do in Cardiff?

- If you would like to do something cultural, you should visit the National Museum and Gallery’s exhibition on arts and science, as it is unique in the whole of Britain. Without a doubt, Cardiff Castle, which was built on the site of the Roman fort is the city’s main tourist attraction. Furthermore you could explore the ruins of Caerleon and Tintern Abbey, which are very close by.

- Another cultural highlight could be a visit to one of the theatres Cardiff has to offer, which encompass everything from the radical or alternative plays shown at the Sherman or Chapter, to the traditional productions in the New Theatre, home to the Welsh National Opera.

- Or you could stroll along Cardiff bay, as the mix of avant-garde architecture, Victorian buildings and top notch leisure centres; make the city on of the most attractive coastal towns in Europe.

- But if you would rather relax, whilst playing sports, there are a plethora of facilities, such as ice rinks, football stadiums, and various indoor pools.

- Welsh football and rugby fanatics, should not miss out on a visit to the Millennium Stadium, which can accommodate up to 72,000 supporters, and dominates the city. It is one of the best stadiums in Europe, and it has three tiers of seating, a rugby VIP lounge, a museum, restaurants, bars, shops, and private lounges, all this below the only retractable roof in the UK.

- You could try Brains, the beer of Cardiff, in one of the city’s many pubs. One of the best and cheapest pubs in Cardiff is the Prince of Wales in the old theatre.
