The city

Brighton is a popular tourist destination on the Sussex coast, in the South of England. Every year around 8 million tourists visit this magical city.

Although it used to be where the royals spent their summers, the city always had a rebellious streak. And if you look beyond the arcades and the pebbled beaches, you could discover an exciting and fascinating place, as Brighton is actually a very creative, intense and colourful city.

Besides the magnificent Royal Pavilion, which is considered to be one of the country’s best museums, there are fantastic cafés and restaurants, wonderful pubs and bars, as well as an exciting nightlife.

What is there to do in Brighton?

– Take a walk along the marina and go to the Royal Pavilion; Brighton’s ultimate landmark. The Indo-Gothic palace was commissioned by George IV. It was built between 1815 and 1822, and was supposed to become the royal family’s summer residence. The pavilion’s interior is fitted with the most lavish Chinoiserie, whereas its exterior was greatly influenced by Hindu architecture.

– Go to the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. The museum is dedicated to the county’s archaeology, history, and art. The collection contains some interesting 20th century works of art and design, inspired by Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and native cultures. The Booth Museum of Natural History has more than half a million stuffed animals of different species, on display.

– Go shopping: Brighton is home to one of the biggest shopping centres in southern England; Churchill Square. It consists of three floors of shops, restaurants, crèches, corner shops and a beauty salon. But if you are looking for some typically English shops, you should explore the narrow alleys in the former fishermen’s neighbourhood, Brighthelmstone and The Lanes. This touristy area is where you will find exciting antiques shops and quirky boutiques.

– Enjoy the buzzing nightlife. Brighton’s nightlife is famous and can only be topped by what London has to offer. There are around 150 bars along Brighton Marina, and each has its individual character.
