Brief Description of the City

Famous for its vineyards, close to the sea and to mountains, Bordeaux is a Port city in the southwest of France, situated on the Garonne River and capital of the Aquitaine region of France. One part of the city, the Port de la Lune (Port of the Moon) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Less than an hour away is the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful sandy beaches.

What is there to do in Bordeaux?

If you like visiting museums, then Bordeaux will not disappoint. There is the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle (Natural History Museum) which is one of the oldest in France, situated near the Jardin Publique. It has a wide collection of zoological specimens including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, crustaceans and butterflies.

Bordeaux is of course known for its wines, so a visit to the Vinorama de Bordeaux is highly recommended. In this museum, you can enter into the world of wine and discover its history and not forgetting the best part, the tasting.

For art lovers, visit the CAPC Musée d'Art Contemporain (Contemporary Art Museum). It is Bordeaux´s main art gallery and is home to more than seven hundred works, from the 1960s to the present day.

Visit the Sainte-André cathedral, a Roman-Catholic cathedral which was built at the end of the 11th century. It is of a gothic style and a UNESCO national heritage site.

Go and relax in the Jardin Publique, a lovely park with an interesting history-it was used for official ceremonies during the French revolution until Napoleon III transformed it into a traditional English garden.

For shopaholics, Bordeaux is full of shops and boutiques and if it´s flea markets you´re after, then head down to Saint Michel, which is best to visit on a Sunday and has a wide range of clothes, furniture and much more. Rue St. Catherine is the busiest and main street for shopping, especially as it is pedestrianised. Le Marché des Grands Hommes, in the Place des Grands Hommes has everything, from jewellery to fresh produce.
