The city

Surrounded by mountains that have inspired many poets, Belfast is the second largest city on the Irish island, and the capital of the country’s north. Located in the island’s east, as it name indicates, the city was built near a sandbank which was formed at the confluence of its rivers.

Belfastians treat their tourists well, it is almost impossible to enter the tourist office and leave without information on the thousands of activities which will turn your trip into an unforgettable adventure. Because of its majestic landscape, Belfast is one of the most impressive cities in the whole of Ireland.

Geographically, the city’s location is perfect for the maritime industry, and the construction of the Titanic made Belfast the world’s most important shipyard. Both the Transport and Ulster Folklore museum can be found here, the latter having won an award for its ‘Origins of Ireland’ gallery.

Even after the many tense years of political-religious unrest, you will notice many differences between the Catholic West and the Protestant East; therefore it is advisable to avoid topics such as Religion or Politics.

Belfast, has drastically overhauled its style, by giving way to atmospheric and stylish bars and restaurants. The ever improving night life is turning the city into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK.

What is there to do in Belfast?

Hidden between the city’s architectural masterpieces, you can find Belfast City Hall, with a 53 metre high dome, and the Ulster Bank; both are fine examples of Edwardian architecture.

For an example of Victorian architecture you can visit Queen’s University, surrounded by the Russell Group and Linenhall Library.

Waterfront Hall, the centre of culture with regards to concerts, plays, etc., sports a more Modernist style.

And you must not forget the Transport and Ulster Folklore museum with its ‘Origins of Ireland’ gallery.

There are various places to satisfy your nutritional needs, from the Crown Liquor Saloon, an old Irish pub, to the Odyssey a shopping centre full of bars, restaurants and clubs.

You should also take a walk in the historic centre of Belfast and go shopping on Donegall Place or Royal Avenue, or you could visit the famous Titanic Quarter.
Explore the hills in the city’s south, including Cavehill. It probably was that hill that served as inspiration for Jonathan Swift’s ‘Gulliver’s Travels’.
